Plan of Action
Part 1:
Cultural immersion through the walk:
All the participants were divided into teams. Each team spend time on site visiting some designated stores, meeting & interviewing people. In order to have a meaningful workshop session we had identified some areas that the participants were to focus on.

Why Aesthetics of Cultural Change Workshop?
Street walk is one of the things that futurebrands does to understand changing India. The chaos on Indian street has its own aesthetics and lends itself to a photographic opportunity. The walk Organised by futurebrands will focus on capturing the glory of Indian street through a perspective of change and dynamism. The activity is aimed at developing an eye for cultural change. Street is an organic system, always living, breathing and open to change from any direction. The walk during Unbox will be a cultural exploration of street to spot nuggets of change within the riot of colours and textures that street offers as a visual treat.

The eye for cultural change finds beauty in anything that’s new, interesting, out of place, and is colliding with exiting or native culture of the street. Idea during the walk is not just to capture what’s interesting but also to strike a conversation with people who are either carriers of new or are facilitating the newness. During the walk we will collect visual and oral nuggets about shedding of old, adoption of new or a juxtaposition of old & new. This will culminate into a workshop facilitated by Futurebrands, where we all share our nuggets and identify some patterns of change. This could be in clothing and styling of people, usage of mobile technology, body language of women, fonts and design of shop façade or anything else that we capture on the streets. The oral nuggets when seen in conjunction with visual one will help us explain some patterns of change and help us arrive at some insights about the emerging India.

Why Old Faridabad Market?
Faridabad, though a part of the “NCR”, in some ways is very different from the Metro that is Delhi. There are things that have stayed the same through the years and some that have been urbansied/modernized. To get the taste of new India, not far from Delhi, we chose the old street market of Faridabad to give us a good reference point for what has and hasn't changed.

Sparking off an interesting contrast of opinions between India and Bharat, the panelists both, agreed and disagreed on the various divides that exist in the idea and representation of India as a nation. Through the spectrum of India Vs. Bharat, and a national identity Vs. the state or regional identities, the panelists spoke about one’s understanding of the nation state, and the importance of constantly redefining what being an Indian meant. The session ended with an acknowledgement of the requirement to balance the so called ‘new India’ and an older, more ‘traditional Bharat’ without compromising on either.

Bharat Darshan India is changing.
We all keep hearing about a new India; an India fertile with possibilities and bursting with enthusiasm. Forever sensitive to social change, we at Futurebrands wondered, where does this New India leave the ‘Bharat’ we come from? How is the lesser known India reacting to these changes and what is happening there? So we ventured out across India; dividing ourselves in teams, accompanied only by an eagerness to learn and an insatiable curiosity. Travelled to towns, to lesser known cities. Travelled by road, took gedi rides, and experienced the local transport. Met the local celebrities and the aam aadmi, saw the tourist attractions and the lesser known hubs. We saw the cities through the eyes of her people, and learnt there’s a lot more to Bharat than we knew.

Excited, we put bits and pieces of this new India together in an exhibition that you can now be a part of. Come join us to see this India through our eyes, and discover the ardent spirit we found.

and spiritual messages that can uplift you. Sagai(Sagayaraj) believes this. Sagai
is a film buff and his idol is Superstar Rajnikanth.
He grew up watching films in a semi legal video parlor in the Mumbai
slums. When he came of age he started working in the same place as did
his father before him. The video theatre no longer exists. In a
charming, eloquent and often politically incorrect street speak, he
shares the story of his video theatre alongside his trip with life and film
About the Director:
JOURNALIST-turned-filmmaker Kavalmaniyam Jagannathan Krishnan likes to pack a hundred ‘theories’ a minute. His first feature length documentary, Videokaaran, was screened at the River to River Film Festival at Florence, Italy, this December. The 37-year-old in his film explores the relationship between cinema and its fans. He is based in Mumbai and studied film at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata.
Video Kaaran was screened at Futrebrands on the 6th of Feb. and was followed by an interaction with the Director, JAGANNATHAN KRISHNAN and the Protagonist, SAGAYARAJ PUSHPARAJ over tea and samosas.
Besides analyzing the finer points of the film, the discussion also highlighted the journey of the director while living with the protagonist whilst making the movie. The contrasts in their lifestyles were evident, but their camaraderie and comfort with each other was palpable too as was the understanding and acceptance of each other’s realities.
