The Bioscope series and its third edition got us the creator of the popular and Instagram page ‘Mumbai Paused’ Gopal Sukumarpillai. Also known as Slogan Murugan, a clear nod to his days as a copywriter, his visit brought us closer to understanding a city, primarily through the stories that reside within it.
Gopal, a visual storyteller, has been capturing Mumbai since 2007 in tales and scenes that weave larger narratives about a place that is constantly evolving and how its inhabitants cling gracefully to a sense of self in the face of adversity and change.
While he took us back to the moments that spoke to him the most - children at play in the cramped hallways of decrepit apartment buildings, abandoned mills sandwiched between skyscrapers, Dalit Blues and Shiv Sena Saffrons jostling for space on billboards, and discarded fishermen’s boats left alone in rivers slowly running dry - we found ourselves compelled to look at our own spaces and people through a similar lens of curiosity. To pause and find what others can’t see. A lens that hopes to create the same sense of wonder we saw in him: a sublime quality that allows him to feel at home wherever he is and make fleeting moments of beauty and connection last for what can feel like a lifetime.
